There is more to David Ring that having the "best fannie on the beach". David has won this competition solidly since it began in 2001, when Tybee’s candidate for the American Diabetes Association’s Kiss-A-Pig campaign was Fannie’s owner, Jenny Orr. This fund-raising competition was started by Jenny, who continues to support this event wholeheartedly. David’s popularity has consistently increased as well as his earnings in the event. The first year of the event, David collected about $600.00 for his "best fannie", and his collections rose to $1,100 the following year. However, this year, his collections rose to $8,200. David admits that he started his fannie fund raising approximately one month prior to the event by placing yellow plastic pigs in the Tybee bars. Other candidates quickly followed suit and there were numerous pigs appearing on the island. David also carried a pig with him to collect everywhere he went.

Many may say that David is driven strictly by the competition – that David only wants to win. That is true to a certain extent – David wants to win the battle for the cure for diabetes. David himself is borderline diabetic. Prior to her death, David’s mother was a severe diabetic and he saw firsthand the devastation to her health caused by diabetes. His father-in-law is also a diabetic. The competition, the fun, but most importantly – the cure are all the reasons David has been involved in supporting Tybee’s candidate for Kiss-A-Pig.

One of the most important messages that David wants to get out to the people of Tybee Island is a BIG THANK YOU!!!! 98% of the money he collected came from Tybee Island and every dollar is appreciated and added up….. to again proclaim David as "Best Fannie on the Beach" for 2004.

David states that he has "officially retired" from competing in the Best Fannie on the Beach competition but his fannie will always belong to the American Diabetes Association. He will be around to coach some of the newcomers and will be there to support the cause and Tybee’s candidate.

David was born in Columbia, Mississippi and moved to Savannah before his first birthday. He grew up in Savannah but spent much of his growing up years on Tybee. He fondly recalls memories of the old pier, amusement park, arcade and ice house, and all the fun he had on Tybee. Because of his love for Tybee, he moved here permanently in 1978. He and his wife, Diane have four children and 10 grandchildren who range in age for 3–16 years. Diane has six sisters and one brother, so there is always family activity at the Ring household. David has been a union pipefittter for 28 years and is looking forward to returning to work after his recuperation from kidney and back surgery which was done earlier this year. In addition, David was honored as being the Big Kahuna for the Beach Bum Parade in 2001.

David will be involved with the annual Marine Rescue Squadron Bar-B-Q on Saturday, May 29 at Memorial Park. This is the squad’s big fund raising activity for the year, which supports their rescue operations. As you can imagine, this is a lot of work, but the squadron members are always combining fun with the work. In preparation for the bar-b-q, there is a "Slaw Sling" on Thursday night prior to the event. Six-hundred pounds of cole slaw will be prepared from a secret recipe. The 80 gallons of baked beans will be prepared from a special secret recipe known only by David and "his dog". They will put 2,400 pounds of pork on the grill on Friday afternoon and will cook all night long. It is expected that 2,000 meals will be served that day.

The Marine Rescue Squadron will also sponsor a children’s fishing tournament at Chimney Creek on Saturday, June 5th. There is expected to be 150 children participating in this fun-filled activity.

David admits that this is "not the Tybee we used to know and love" but he wouldn’t be anywhere else. He thinks Tybee has gotten too big and some of the changes are not good. One of the things about Tybee that has never changed (and hopefully will not change) is the generosity of the people here. The amount of money collected for the Kiss-A- Pig campaign as well as the fund raising activities held for Tybee residents in need is nothing short of amazing. Again, to the people of Tybee, a special heartfelt thank you from David Ring for your support and generosity.

(A special message to Travis Taylor from David: "If you’re going to run with the big dogs, you’ve got to get your ass off the porch.")
